Nuon Rithy Niron, World Vision Cambodia (WVC) manager of child safe tourism project, called for all government ranking officials, expatriate tourists and especially child sex traffickers to work hand-in-hand to combat the child sex tourism in Cambodia, during a Child Labour radio interview programme last Wednesday.

Child sex tourism has become a recent hot issue while expatriate tourism has risen dramatically. However, there are more crises to heighten the issue.

"The child sex tourism industry has been fueled by both local and foreign tourists, a weaker economy, unemployment and low wages, migration… and so on," said Nuon Rithy Niron, during the Child Labour one-hour live programme via Beehive Radio FM 105, organised by LICADHO (the Cambodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights).

According to Long Borin, LICADHO's child right advocacy officer, the programme was launched to alert people about child rights. "We initiated the programme in order to let people and especially the government to become aware of the issue. We have invited experts from WVC who have been working on the issue and are cooperating with LICADHO to share information."

According to the WVC monthly hotline report, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior on child sex abuse, 716 cases have been documented from January to July 2007. This is an increase of 55.58% from 2006.

In response to one caller's question on what WVC has done to prevent child abuse, Nuon Rithy Niron replied, "So far WVC has implemented five main projects consisting of Child Safe Tourism Project, Child Sex Tourism Prevention Project, Law Enforcement Against Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking of Children Project, After Care for Trafficked and Sexually Exploited Children of Cambodia Project, and Neah Veah Thmay Trauma Recover Center."

"I am concerned about child sex tourism in Cambodia because the consequences can affect not only individuals but the society as a whole," said Tuon Hay, a caller from Prek Krobas District, Takeo Province. He feels he has become more aware of the child sex tourism after spending one hour listening to the programme. "I will spread the message to parents, children and others for the sake of prevention and protection of our children," said Tuon Hay.
