Getting "vaccinated" against child battering
By Renato Hernandez on 18 Sep 2007
In Chile, seven out of ten children are victims of violence. According to the last Unicef study, 73% of the polled children said to have suffered some kind of violence within their homes.
For the sixth consecutive year, World Vision is setting up the “In my opinion” six-week campaign of public activities, which raises awareness and promotes violence-free interaction among family members.
"What’s all this about?" asks a surprised passer-by. "We are teaching people how to deal with children" answers a 10-year-old sponsored girl from Cencreco Area Development Programme (ADP) in Santiago, the capital of Chile.
Children here are setting up for the "In my opinion" national and public campaign, in which children from the ADPs advocate for their rights and spread the news to their community through different public acts.
Children from Cencreco ADP set up a post in a street fair in their neighbourhood, and called it a "vaccination centre" where they were handing out a "calendar of good treatment for children". The calendar invites parents to carry out non-violent activities with their children every day.
Furthermore, the children were giving every passer-by blue ribbons to wear on their lapels as a token that they had received the "shots" against violence against children.
"I am very happy to be here because we are helping people to change the way they deal with children. We want them to stop beating us and we want them to let the children express their opinions," says one child with conviction.
