Sponsored children celebrate higher education success

Some 45 sponsored children will become freshmen in colleges or high schools in the coming semester, achieving the dream of higher education success.

World Vision supports 40,000 impoverished children in Taiwan with tuition subsidies every school year. Many students are motivated to pursue a higher education. This Summer 147 sponsored children passed entrance examinations to outstanding high schools, and 62 to universities or colleges.

"I used to feel a sense of inferiority for myself because my family is poor," said Hsiao-Lin, who has been accepted at the National Dong Hwa University and tops the list of new students of the College of Indigenous Studies.

"Knowing that education is a path to success, I always study hard to get good marks from school. At some point I felt I could never make it, but because of the people who love and support me, I told myself not to give up. I’m glad to say, I did not let them down and I’m getting closer to my dream than before," said Hsiao-Lin.

Students shared their stories with sponsors at a celebration mid-month. It is hoped that other vulnerable children can be encouraged to follow their examples and study hard against adversity.

Ms.Cui-Yu Chen, sponsor of Hsiao-Wen, travelled a long distance to attend her high school graduation last April. Ms Chen gave Hsiao-Wen a sewing machine as a present to help her pursue her dream. Hsiao-Wen is entering the Department of Fashion Design at Shih Chien University.

"To enter a new school is simply a beginning. World Vision will continue to support you through your education. I challenge you to prepare yourself for the future and become a help to others," encouraged Hank Du, Executive Director of World Vision Taiwan.

It is estimated that about a half of World Vision's sponsored children who have just graduated from senior high school will be admitted to colleges or universities; and 90 percent of junior high graduates will progress to senior high school.

World Vision will distribute tuition subsidies to 15,894 primary school students, 10,979 junior high students, 6,524 senior high students, 1,628 college students, and 150 graduate students.
